25 Things to Do in Montrose, Houston (From a Local)
We manage 5 properties in Montrose and our team lives here. These aren't recommendations from a Google search — they're places we actually go to on our days off. No tourist traps, no paid placements.
Coffee & Work Spots
1. Blacksmith — The gold standard for Montrose coffee. Great espresso, solid WiFi, and enough seating that you can camp for a few hours without guilt. Gets crowded on weekend mornings.
2. Siphon Coffee — Smaller and quieter than Blacksmith. Better for focused work. Their pour-over is exceptional, and the staff actually knows coffee.
3. Boomtown Coffee — On Westheimer, bigger space, good for groups or longer work sessions. They roast their own beans and the cold brew is dangerously good.
4. Inversion Coffee House — In a converted house on Montrose Blvd. Quirky, cozy, and has a backyard patio. Not the fastest WiFi, but great for casual reading or writing.
5. Tout Suite — More of a bakery/cafe hybrid, but the space is gorgeous and the pastries are worth the trip. Good for a morning treat before a walk.
Restaurants (Where We Actually Eat)
6. Uchi Houston — Japanese farmhouse dining. Not cheap, but genuinely one of the best restaurants in Houston. The hot rock wagyu and cool & crunchy roll are non-negotiable.
7. Underbelly Hospitality (Georgia James) — Texas BBQ elevated to fine dining. The beef rib is a religious experience. Reservations recommended.
8. Xin Chao — Vietnamese-Cajun fusion from the team behind Crawfish & Noodles. Creative, bold flavors, and a beautiful space.
9. Pizaro's Pizza — Neapolitan-style pizza that rivals what you'd find in Brooklyn or Naples. Small spot, often a wait, always worth it.
10. The Breakfast Klub — Yes, it's famous. Yes, there's a line. But the wings and waffles genuinely deserve the hype. Go on a weekday if you can.
11. Tacos Tierra Caliente — The taco truck on Westheimer that every local knows. Al pastor and barbacoa at 2am after a night out. Cash only, no frills, perfect tacos.
12. Pondicheri — Indian-inspired cafe that does incredible brunch. The naan pizza and chai are standouts. Great for a leisurely weekend morning.
Outdoor Activities
13. Buffalo Bayou Park — Houston's crown jewel park. 160 acres along the bayou with running/biking trails, a dog park, kayak rentals, and stunning skyline views. The sunset from the Rosemont pedestrian bridge is unbeatable.
14. Menil Park — The green space around the Menil Collection. Shady, quiet, and perfect for reading or a picnic. The live oaks here are massive.
15. Levy Park — A few blocks south of Montrose in Upper Kirby. Great playground, community garden, food trucks on weekends, and a covered pavilion for shade.
16. Hermann Park — Technically Museum District, but walkable from Montrose. Zoo, Japanese garden, pedal boats, golf course, and miles of trails. You could spend an entire day here.
Culture & Arts
17. The Menil Collection — Free. Always free. World-class art in a beautiful Renzo Piano building. The Rothko Chapel is next door and equally essential.
18. Contemporary Arts Museum Houston — Also free. Rotating exhibitions of contemporary art in a striking stainless steel building on Montrose Blvd.
19. The Orange Show Center for Visionary Art — Outsider art at its finest. The main site is a folk art maze, and they organize the annual Art Car Parade.
20. Numbers Night Club — Houston's legendary goth/industrial/alternative club. Been here since the 80s. Even if it's not your scene, it's worth one visit for the history.
Shopping & Browsing
21. Cactus Music — Independent record store that's been a Montrose institution for decades. Great vinyl selection and they host in-store performances.
22. Space Montrose — LGBTQ+ community center and bookstore. Thoughtful book curation, local art, and community events.
23. Montrose Flea Market — Happens monthly in various locations. Vintage furniture, local art, plants, and food vendors. Check their Instagram for dates.
24. Westheimer Road — Just walk it. From Montrose Blvd to Shepherd, Westheimer is lined with thrift stores, vintage shops, tattoo parlors, and restaurants. It's the spine of the neighborhood.
The One Thing You Have to Do
25. Walk Montrose at golden hour. Seriously. Pick any residential street between Westheimer and Alabama, and just walk. The bungalows, the live oaks, the gardens, the murals — Montrose reveals itself best on foot, in the hour before sunset, when the light goes golden and the neighborhood comes alive.
