Best Neighborhoods in Houston for Remote Workers (2025)
Houston isn't the first city that comes to mind when you think "remote work paradise." But hear us out — the cost of living is dramatically lower than Austin or Denver, there's no state income tax, and the food scene is genuinely world-class. The trick is picking the right neighborhood.
We've hosted hundreds of remote workers across our properties, and these are the neighborhoods they keep coming back to.
Montrose — The Creative Hub
Best for: Freelancers, creatives, and anyone who wants walkability without paying Manhattan prices.
Montrose is Houston's most walkable neighborhood, period. You can walk to coffee shops, restaurants, bars, galleries, and parks without ever touching your car. For remote workers, this matters — your "commute" becomes a 5-minute walk to a coffee shop with great WiFi.
What you'll love:
- Dozens of coffee shops with fast WiFi (Blacksmith, Siphon, Boomtown)
- Walking distance to museums, parks, and the Menil Collection
- Diverse restaurant scene within blocks
- Bike-friendly streets and proximity to Buffalo Bayou trails
The vibe: Creative, progressive, eclectic. Think vintage shops next to craft cocktail bars next to taquerias. It's Houston's answer to Brooklyn — but with parking and sunshine.
Our Montrose properties: Graustark, Branard, Dorothy, McDuffie, and Sul Ross all sit in the heart of Montrose, each within walking distance of Westheimer and Lower Westheimer corridors.
The Heights — Tree-Lined Streets & Local Character
Best for: Remote workers who want a neighborhood that feels like a small town inside a big city.
The Heights is Houston's most charming neighborhood. Victorian-era bungalows, massive oak trees, and a walkable main street (19th Street and Heights Boulevard) packed with local shops and restaurants. It's quieter than Montrose but still has plenty of energy.
What you'll love:
- Heights Boulevard running trail (shaded, flat, beautiful)
- 19th Street shopping and dining corridor
- Farmer's market on Saturdays
- Strong community feel — you'll recognize your barista within a week
The vibe: Established, family-friendly, but not boring. Young professionals and families mix easily. The architecture alone makes your daily walk feel like a vacation.
Our Heights property: 520 Heights puts you right in the middle of it all — walkable to White Oak Music Hall, the hike-and-bike trail, and dozens of restaurants.
Museum District / Med Center — Culture Meets Convenience
Best for: Remote workers who want easy access to museums, parks, and the Medical Center (great for healthcare consultants).
This area sits between Hermann Park, Rice University, and the Texas Medical Center. It's more residential and quiet than Montrose, but you're still close to everything. The park system here is exceptional — Hermann Park alone has a zoo, Japanese garden, golf course, and miles of trails.
What you'll love:
- Hermann Park for daily walks, runs, or bike rides
- Free museums (Menil, MFAH on certain days)
- Light rail access to downtown and NRG Stadium
- Proximity to Rice Village shopping and dining
The vibe: Cultured, green, slightly academic. You'll share the neighborhood with Rice students, museum-goers, and medical professionals.
Our Museum District properties: Oxford and Murworth are both in this zone, offering easy access to the Med Center and Hermann Park.
Galleria Area — Corporate Convenience
Best for: Remote workers who occasionally need to meet clients in the Galleria/Uptown corridor, or who want upscale dining and shopping nearby.
The Galleria area is Houston's commercial center — think high-rise offices, upscale restaurants, and the Galleria mall itself. It's less walkable than Montrose or the Heights, but if your remote work involves occasional in-person meetings with Houston-based clients, this location can't be beat.
What you'll love:
- Proximity to major corporate offices (if you need occasional face time)
- Upscale dining and shopping
- Memorial Park nearby for outdoor activities
- Easy highway access to anywhere in Houston
Our Galleria Area properties: Aftonshire and Fargo put you in the Galleria corridor with easy access to both the business district and Memorial Park.
Midtown — Urban Energy
Best for: Remote workers in their 20s-30s who want nightlife, restaurants, and a more urban feel.
Midtown is Houston's densest neighborhood — lots of mid-rise apartments, bars, restaurants, and a younger crowd. It's walkable to downtown and has light rail access. If you want the energy of a city center without the sterility of a downtown high-rise, Midtown delivers.
What you'll love:
- Walking distance to downtown
- Light rail on Main Street
- Diverse restaurant scene (Vietnamese, Mexican, BBQ, all within blocks)
- Active nightlife if you want it
Our Midtown properties: West Alabama and Audubon are both in the Midtown zone, close to the Main Street corridor and light rail.
The Bottom Line
For most remote workers, we recommend Montrose (best walkability and coffee shop density) or The Heights (best for daily quality of life and outdoor activities). But honestly, any of these neighborhoods will serve you well — it comes down to whether you prioritize walkability, green space, nightlife, or corporate proximity.
All of our furnished apartments come with fast WiFi, a dedicated workspace, and month-to-month flexibility. No lease, no furniture shopping, no utility setup. Just show up and start working.
